ACCESS CONTROL AS PER ISPS code

The main and exit gate are presently managed 24hrs a day and all pedestrians and vehicular traffic are discretionally search both inwards and out wards.

THERE IS AN EVITABLE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM FOR PORT ENTRY ALREADY IN PLACE AS PER ISPS code

It is an ID card system which is color coded viz.

  • Blue – for port staff
  • Green – for government official
  • Red – for shipping agents
  • Brown – for stevedores
  • Yellow – official visitors

The officers of the ports security unit of the Gambia ports authority closely work in tandem with the Gambia navy and patrol the port area, basins, and anchorage and access channels to the port regularly.

However certain areas of the port can be declared a RESTRICTED AREA when it is deemed necessary eg. The old Banjul wharf a cruise liner, carrying passenger’s or navy boat is berthed there.

The inner gate leading to the jetty can be closed and physically manned by both the ports security cadres and the Gambia navy crews till the departure of the vessel allowing only authorized persons access as per ISPS code.

RESTRICTED AREAS WITHIN THE PORT OF BANJUL

The ports has been demarcated into three zones

A) Zone A to represent the north and south terminal

B) Zone B to represent the then PWD container terminal

C) Zone C to represent the head office building and the canteen

The following area of the ports have been identified as restricted area with tight security measures in place to prohibit access to unauthorized persons

  • Old and new jetty
  • Generator house
  • Premier agro oil tanks or (silos)
  • Fuel dump
  • Stores and mechanical workshops areas
  • Bonded ware house complex (BWC) car port.
  • In essence security in general is a combination of policies procedures and systems and therefore every ones responsibility to jealously protect and secure the assets of the authority.
